Also known as Akua-Ba, Asante dolls are handcarved wooden figures carried for good health and good luck. Each figure is handmade by artisans in Ghana and carries a unique personality and expression. While Dr. Barnes was certainly not alone in his appreciation of African art, he was one of the first collectors to showcase African art alongside European masterworks on an equal footing. Barnes used carved masks from the Baule, Dan, Edo, Fang, and Guro cultures of West Africa to highlight the fact that line, color, and form were the common ground of art, regardless of origin.
