House of Barnes

The House of Barnes: The Man, The Collection, The Controversy provides the first scholarly study on the historical, art history, and political context during which Dr. Barnes purchased masterpieces and attempted to redefine aesthetics with groundbreaking new terminology.

Author Dr. Neil L. Rudenstine, a Barnes Foundation board member and former Harvard University President, reveals rarely-seen documents to tell the fascinating story.

These documents include letters by Barnes to Europe's top art dealers of the 1920s, controversial court decisions, neighborhood opposition as early as the 1960s, and financial documents that illustrate the Barnes Foundation's dire straits in the early 2000s that forced its move. The book also provides 16 pages of full-color illustrations of the collection's masterpieces.

Paperback, 229 pages. Cover measures 11 x 8.5 inches.
