One of the largest and most ambitious of a series of five paintings, Cézanne portrays a group of farmhands enjoying a game of cards. He paints the card players to be stoic and on a scale that is usually reserved for much grander subjects, which is unlikely the reality of the tavern scenes he was inspired by.
Paul Cézanne, The Card Players (Les Joueurs de cartes), 1890–1892.
Measures 3 1/4 inches by 2 1/2 inches.
