Ruth Asawa "Red Meander" notebook

Style: Sketchbook

This notebook is based on Ruth Asawa's Untitled (SF.031, Red Meander on Pink), c. 1957-1959, currently on view in the Barnes special exhibition Noguchi to Asawa: Designing Postwar America. Perfect for sketching or journaling, these Barnes exclusive notebooks feature an allover print velvet-touch paper cover, elastic band closure, and premium Smyth-sewn "lay-flat binding.

While attending Black Mountain College in the late 1940s, Ruth Asawa participated in exercises assigned by Josef Albers in his legendary Basic Design Class. These exercises produced a motif known as a “meander” drawing, an undulating repeat pattern created with a spiraling line that suggests a field of fluctuating positive and negative forms, akin to the interplay of inside and outside that Asawa would later conjure in her “continuous” looped-wire sculptures.

The patterns correlate with two enormous redwood doors that Asawa meticulously carved with her children over the summer of 1961 and installed at the entrance to her family home in San Francisco.
